A sitemap file contains a listing of all the pages on your website. Some search engines such as google use a sitemap file to help index your website. Having a sitemap file does not increase your search rankings, but it can be used to work better with the search engines and get more information about how your site is being indexed.

The local listings are those little "pins" on the map displayed between the sponsored links and the organic links. It lists businesses by the area they are located in. If you lived in Los Angeles, CA when you searched for that restaurant, you might have typed in "restaurant Los Angeles" or "San Fernando Valley restaurants" depending on where you are located and the area you were interested in going to.
